Patient Preparation
The patient should be given clear written instructions concerning the collection and transport of the specimen by the laboratory including a patient questionnaire, sterile container and transport bag
Special Collection Instructions
- The sample should be collected after a minimum of 48 hours but not longer than 7 days of sexual abstinence.
- The name of the patient, the period of abstinence, date/time of collection, completeness of collection and any transport difficulties should be recorded.
- The specimen should be delivered to the laboratory within 1 hour of collection and be protected from extreme temperatures.

It is important to collect the entire sample. If part of the specimen is lost during collection, this must be indicated on the report. The first part of the ejaculate contains the highest concentration of spermatozoa and enzymes necessary for liquefaction
