Collection Method

Collection of Non-GYN’s varies for different specimen sites and types. Please call the Cytology Lab at 573-632-5232 for specific instructions, and supplies if needed.

50 mL (fresh)

Urine

50 mL (fresh or in 30 mL Cytolyt) 12-24 hour urine collections for cytology are unacceptable.

First morning urines are not optimal

Bronchial specimens

 each specimen site/type in separate 30 mL vials of Cytolyt (fresh or specimens in 50% ETOH acceptable, submit brushes in Cytolyt)

Sputum

(fresh or in 50% ETOH acceptable)

GI

(washes in 30 mL Cytolyt or with 50% ETOH, brushes in 30 mL Cytolyt with 2 air dried smears)

Reportable Units

Critical Value

“Positive for Malignancy” diagnosis will prompt physician notification and cancer tracking. Other unusual/unexpected diagnoses may also trigger additional physician notification.

Reasons for Rejection

Other:                           

  • Specimen has leaked out of container or has been contaminated.
  • Mislabeled or unlabeled containers or slides.
  • Submitting specimen in unacceptable containers such as a Vacutainer bottles and bags.
  • Improperly handled specimens

Specimen Stability

Specimen stability varies, please submit specimen as soon as possible after collection.

Refrigerate at 2-8C if it will be sitting overnight or longer before pick-up/delivery to lab.

Deliver specimen, after placing electronic order, to CRMC Processing/Laboratory. When electronic ordering is unavailable, a paper Cytology requisition must accompany the specimen
