Patient Preparation

No special patient preparation required

Collection Method

Eyelid, Lacrimal Duct:

Sample per physician Guidelines.

Corneal Rim, Contact Lens, Solution or Case:

Place in sterile container-may add enough sterile saline to prevent drying out.

Conjunctiva:

Sample both eyes with separate swabs by rolling swab over each conjunctiva.

Corneal Scrapings:

Instill 2 drops of local anesthetic. using sterile spatula, scrape ulcers or lesions and add to a sterile container.

Aqueous Fluid, Vitreous Fluid, Intraocular Fluid:

Obtain per physician guidelines.

Outer Ear:

 Use moistened swab to remove any debris or crust from ear canal. Obtain sample by firmly rotating swab in our canal.

 Typanocentesis:

Intact ear drum (clean ear canal with soap solution, collect fluid via syringe aspiration.

Ruptured ear drum:

Collect fluid on flexible shaft swab via auditory speculum
