Patient Preparation

Collection Method
Eyelid, Lacrimal Duct: |
Sample per physician Guidelines. |
Corneal Rim, Contact Lens, Solution or Case: |
Place in sterile container-may add enough sterile saline to prevent drying out. |
Conjunctiva: |
Sample both eyes with separate swabs by rolling swab over each conjunctiva. |
Corneal Scrapings: |
Instill 2 drops of local anesthetic. using sterile spatula, scrape ulcers or lesions and add to a sterile container. |
Aqueous Fluid, Vitreous Fluid, Intraocular Fluid: |
Obtain per physician guidelines. |
Outer Ear: |
Use moistened swab to remove any debris or crust from ear canal. Obtain sample by firmly rotating swab in our canal. |
Typanocentesis: |
Intact ear drum (clean ear canal with soap solution, collect fluid via syringe aspiration. |
Ruptured ear drum: |
Collect fluid on flexible shaft swab via auditory speculum |
